More trouble for Oshiomhole as APC coalition calls for his removal from office

- An APC coalition has supported calls for exit of the party's national chairman Adams Oshiomhole from office

- The group said in a statement on Tuesday, June 4 that it believes it was high time Oshiomhole resigned from office because his reign has only brought the party troubles

- The group however rejects a return to the era of former chairman John Odigie-Oyegun who they saw as a weak leader

A combination of support groups of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has demanded that its national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, should leave office following the crisis that has recently engulfed the ruling party.

Daily Trust reports that the coalition joined the calls for Oshiomhole’s resignation because, it claimed, the party has been in crisis since his emergence as APC national chairman.

The coalition made its stand in a statement released late on Tuesday, June 4 night by James Ovia and Ismaila Faruq.

According to the coalition, it would be difficult for APC to win elections in 2023 with the ways of the former Edo state governor, therefore he should leave.

The statement read in part: “We believe that with all the happenings within the APC, and with Oshiomhole in the helm of affairs in the party, there is no way the party will emerge victorious in the 2023 general elections.

“We feel it is therefore imperative to demand the immediate resignation of Adams Oshiomhole as the National Chairman of APC to pave the way for the emergence of a more serious and committed leader that will shepherd the party ahead of the elections ahead.”

The group went on to note how the APC has 'suffered' under the leadership of Oshiomhole, losing several grounds it gained in the 2015 elections.

The coalition knocked Oshiomhole for blaming the party's erstwhile national chairman John Odigie-Oyegun.

However, they rejected a return of Oyegun's era which they said was an even more terrible period for the party.

“We have observed that Oshiomhole’s leadership has now resorted to blaming the leadership of his predecessor, John Odigie-Oyegun, as being responsible for the current travails of the party.

“Though we do not wish a return of the Oyegun era as he was a weak leader, we make bold to say that all the structures put together under Oyegun were dissolved immediately after Oshiomhole’s emergence through the congresses he conducted at the wards, local governments, states and national level, hence the former chairman has no portion of blame on the matter at hand."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that stakeholders of the APC in Edo, the home state of the party's national chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, on Sunday, June 2, joined the loud calls for his immediate resignation.

The group under the umbrella of Edo APC Coalition for Progress, at a press conference held in Benin, the state capital, challenged Oshiomhole “to toe the path of honour,” accusing him of promoting nepotism in Edo politics and the nation at large.

Also, stunned by the reality of its defeat in the last general elections, the Imo chapter of the APC has predicted that the party should be ready for a great setback in the subsequent polls if Oshiomhole remained the national party chairman.

The chairman of the chapter, Dan Nwafor, made this known when accessing the deluge of lingering crisis bedeviling the party under the leadership of Oshiomhole-led national working committee.

According to him, President Muhammadu Buhari may be the last president the party will produce if the former Edo governor is still allowed to hold the helms of the party's affairs.
