Gernot Rohr rules out top Super Eagles stars out of Zimbabwe’s Warriors friendly

Super Eagles pair Alex Iwobi and William Troost-Ekong will not be involved in Nigeria’s friendly against Zimbabwe’s Warriors at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba on Saturday, June 9.

According to completesports.com, Iwobi is expected to join the rest of the squad in Ismaila, Egypt after featuring in the Europa League final in Baku, netting Arsenal’s only goal in the 4-1 loss to rivals Chelsea.

On the other hand, Troost-Ekong, plies his trade at Serie A campaigners Udinese will also be missing in action after failing to make it to Super Eagles camp in Asaba.

Three other squad members - Ahmed Musa, Shehu Abdullahi and Odion Ighalo are still doubtful for the match.

However, the duo of Musa and Abdullahi will be hitting camp later on Wednesday, June 5 after an extended break due to observe the Ramadan fasting and Sallah festival.

Speaking ahead of the pre-tournament friendly, Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr, admitted that Troost-Ekong will not be ready for the game, ahead of 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

” He (Troost-Ekong) will not make it for the friendly game against Zimbabwe. We expect him to arrive soon but he won’t be ready for the game on Saturday,” Rohr added.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles commenced camping in Asaba, Delta State on Sunday, June 2 for Africa’s football show-piece slated to hold in Egypt later in the month.

Super Eagles squad members are due to fly out to Ismaila, Egypt on Sunday, June 9 for the final leg of their preparations.

Nigeria will battle Senegal in their last pre-tournament friendly on June 16 in the Ismailia Stadium

The three-time African champions kick-off their AFCON 2019 campaign against Burundi on Saturday, June 22, at the Alexandria Stadium in Alexandria.

The will also tackle Guinea at the same venue, before facing Madagascar in Alexandria on June 30, in Alexandria.

The AFCON 2019 tournament is billed to hold in Egypt from the June 21 to July 20.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr has revealed players that will feature prominently during the friendly against Zimbabwe in Asaba.

These Super Eagles stars include the likes of of Leon Balogun and Kelechi Iheanacho who struggled with Brighton and Leicester City respectively.

And the German tactician is ready to start helping them work on their fitness ahead of the AFCON 2019 tournament.
