The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has stated that anti-open grazing laws in some states would be reviewed for compatibility with the nation's constitution, if he wins the presidency.

The former vice president made the comment at a town hall event on Wednesday night, January 30, Premium Times reports.

Legit.ng gathers that stated that Atiku suggested that there shouldn't be an exception to herders as the constitution guarantees freedom of movement.

He stated that herders would generate higher income from beef and milk if the government educates them through extension services.

Strict anti-open grazing routes have been in enforcement since 2016 in Benue, Taraba and Ekiti states; and Atiku's proposal could conflict with the position of the states which have refused to back down from the law, despite repeated warnings by President Muhammadu Buhari that it was antagonistic towards the predominantly Fulani herders.

It is unclear how the governors of Taraba and Benue - which both belong to the PDP - would react to Atiku's proposal, as they had previously countered such when suggested by Buhari.

Atiku, who is widely believed to own large investment in livestock, also stated that he would implement policies geared towards establishing reserves for nomadic herdsmen, if elected as president.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the national coordinator of the Non-Indigenes Association of Nigeria for Atiku/Obi Presidency, Lot Ninzom Jonathan, said the emergence of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), will bring to an end, the incessant killings arising from herdsmen/farmers clashes in the North, as well as the poverty currently ravaging the country.

Jonathan made the comment in Bayelsa state during the inauguration of the state chapter of the association.

He lamented that the Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government lacked strategies that would return the nation’s economy to a progressive track.
