The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has commenced repair work at the Makurdi military airfield inside its base in Benue state.
According to a statement sent to Legit.ng by the NAF director of public relations and information, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, repair work on the runway and ancillary facilities at the airfield is progressing steadily towards timely completion.
Air Commodore Daramola stated that the repairs, which had necessitated the closure of the airfield to civil flight operations, “are aimed at improving flight safety in accordance with global best practices as well as in line with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) regulations.”

He further stated that in order to hasten completion of the work, repair activities are being conducted round the clock, both day and night.
Legit.ng gathered that the scope of work covers removal of failed sealant and application of fresh sealant to the concrete slab joints of the runway, taxiways and apron; resurfacing of cracked portions of the manoeuvring area as well as re-marking of the runway, amongst others.
“Currently, the work has reached an advanced stage and is expected to be completed around January 2019,” Air Commodore Daramola noted.

Recall that the Benue Youth Forum (BYF) recently condemned the selective ban the federal government imposed on the Makurdi airfield.
In a statement sent to Legit.ng on Thursday, December 6 by the forum's president, Terrence Kuanum, he lamented that the ban is not applicable to federal government officials and their agents.
He called on President Muhammadu Buhari to direct relevant agencies to reverse the restriction order on the airport.
