NAFDAC shuts Emzor, two others indicted in 'Sweet sweet codeine' documentary

- NAFDAC has shut down Emzor and two other pharmaceutica.l companies indicted in codeine syrup saga

- The director general of the agency, Mojisola Adeyeye, made it known in a statement on Monday, May 7

- She said the decision was taken following findings from investigations and inspections at the affected companies

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration & Control (NAFDAC) has shut Peace Standard pharm.aceutical limited, Bioraj phar.maceutical limited and Emzor pha.rmaceuticals limited that were implicated in the codeine syrup crisis.

The Punch reports that the director general of the agency, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, in a statement on Monday, May 7, said the decision was taken following findings from investigations and inspections at the affected companies.

NAIJ.com gathered that she said that it become necessary to shut down all the product lines of the three companies to allow for a full and comprehensive investigation

The statement read: “Due to insufficient evidence gathered and apparent resistance to provide needed documents during our inspection on May 2, 2018, at the respective companies in Ilorin and Lagos, respectively, it has become necessary to shut down all the product lines of the three companies – Peace Standard Pha.rmaceutical limited, plots 3 & 8, Adewole Industrial estate, Lubcon avenue, Ilorin, Kwara state; Bioraj Ph.armaceutical Limited, 405 Kaima Road, Ilorin, Kwara State and Emzor phar.maceuticals Ind. Ltd., Ajao estate, Lagos. This is to allow for a full and comprehensive investigation. The three companies, therefore, remain closed.”

“The reopening of the manufacturing companies will depend on the level of cooperation that is shown during the comprehensive investigation.”

"The DG constituted a task force to be made up of NAFDAC directors in charge of registration and regulatory affairs; narcotics and controlled substances; and drug evaluation and research.”

"Members of PMG-MAN in the committee included the executive secretary of PMG-MAN, Fidson Healthcare; May & Baker plc; and Emzor Ph.armaceutical Industries.

"A team of nine NAFDAC and ten mobile police officers had been sent to Ilorin, Kwara state on May 2, 2018, to carry out an investigational inspection at the companies of the two different ph.armaceutical companies that are licensed to manufacture codeine-containing syrup, and which were implicated in the BBC documentary."

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had previously reported that a students' advocacy group has condemned the ban of codeine drug by the federal government of Nigeria. The advocacy group, Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP), said the ban of codeine by the federal government could breed negative consequences for the country.
