Paul Pogba's brace powers Man United to 2-1 win over West Ham in a tough Premier League tie

Manchester United returned to winning ways in the Premier League following their 2-1 crucial win over West Ham United at Old Trafford.

Two goals from World Cup winning midfielder Paul Pogba handed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men maximum points after the game.

The Frenchman opened scoring for the hosts in the 19th minute through the spot kick after Robert Snodgrass roughly tackled Juan Mata in the danger zone.

Meanwhile, having lost four of their last five matches heading into this encounter, the Red Devils needed to avoid repeating the terrible run set over 27 years ago under Sir Alex Ferguson.

United suffered five defeats in six matches in all competitions - a run which was considered the club's worst in history.

However, just four minutes into the second half, Felipe Anderson restored parity for the visitors after tapping in a cross from his teammate in the 49th minute.

With ten minutes left to play in the match, Anthony Martial won another penalty for the Red Devils in the 80th minute after being fouled by Ryan Fredericks in the danger zone.

And once again, Pogba delivered the spot kick to restore United's leadership for the remainder of the encounter on home turf.

Several other attempts by both sides failed to find the target after which the referee signaled the end of the match in the 96th minute.

Solskjaer's men, courtesy of the victory have now moved one spot up on the Premier League table, as they are currently fifth with 64 points from 33 matches - two behind fourth place side Chelsea.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Barcelona are one leg through to the semifinals of this season's Champions League following their slim victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The Catalans took the lead through an own goal from Luke Shaw who deflected Luis Suarez's header into his side's net in the 12 minute.

Marcus Rashford tried restoring parity for the Red Devils almost immediately after conceding their first goal but his efforts was intercepted by the visitors defenders.
