The scheduled March 23 supplementary governorship election in Adamawa may not hold as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) awaits the court’s decision which is expected on Thursday, March 21.
In a chat with newsmen, the state’s resident electoral commissioner, Barrister Kassim Gaidam, stated that the ruling expected on Thursday would determine whether the election would hold or not; even though all preparations for the exercise had been concluded, Daily Trust reports.

Legit.ng gathers that citing relevant sections of the Electoral Act, Gaidam had previously indicated that the court lacked the powers to stop the commission from conduction elections.
However, in what looked like a shift from his earlier position, the REC stated: “As a law abiding institution, we will respect the ruling of the court on the supplementary election.”
Gaidam disclosed that INEC headquarters had sent a team of senior lawyers to defend the commission at Thursday’s court hearing.

Recall that Legit.ng previously reported that the electoral commission had been restrained by a state high court in Yola from conducting the supplementary governorship election in Adamawa state.
Justice Abdulaziz Waziri of the Adamawa state high court granted an interim injunction barring INEC from conducting the supplementary polls in the 44 polling units where voting either did not hold during the March 9 governorship election or was cancelled.
The order was given, following a motion ex parte filed by the Movement of Restoration for Defence of Democracy (MRPD), claiming that its party logo was excluded from the ballot paper for the March 9 governorship election conducted in the state.
