Tension in Akwa Ibom as hoodlums kill two in attack on INEC office

- Hoodlums suspected to be political thugs have killed two people at an INEC office in Akwa Ibom state

- The hoodlums attacked people waiting for sensitive INEC materials after reportedly suspecting that the materials had been allegedly hijacked

- INEC REC is the state Mike Igini confirmed the attack which also witnessed the burning of several vehicles

Two people have been reported killed after hoodlums attacked an office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Obot-Akara local government area of Akwa Ibom state.

Channels television reports that many vehicles were burnt in the incident after some thugs attacked where party agents and supporters waited for the delivery of sensitive materials from the state capital Uyo.

The suspected political thugs were said to have gone haywire after suspecting that the sensitive materials being expected from Uyo had been allegedly hijacked.

The hoodlums went on to vent their anger on the INEC office and those present, killing two people in the process.

The sad incident was confirmed by Mike Igini, INEC's Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state although the police has yet to officially confirm the attack.

Legit.ng reports that the event comes just about a day after the senior special assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on National Assembly matters, Senator Ita Enang, said contrary to reports, there won’t be electoral violence in Akwa Ibom.

Enang gave the assurance in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Uyo, Akwa Ibom.

Enang, an indigene of Uyo, was reacting to apprehension in the state over reports that there might be crisis, saying that all would be well and that plans had been set to ensure that the elections were conducted without violence.
