Nigerian newspaper review for February 28: Why I will challenge election result in court - Atiku

The main headlines of the mainstream Nigerian newspapers for Thursday, February 28, are focused on the outcome of the 2019 presidential elections and the reactions from President Muhammadu Buhari and his main challenger, Atiku Abubakar.

ThisDay Newspaper, on its main page, reports that President Buhari said his successful second term bid is victory for the country and promised to run an inclusive government.

Speaking after receiving his certificate of return from INEC, Buhari, who was accompanied to the ceremony by his wife, Aisha, and notable party men such as the national chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole, and the national leader of APC, Senator Bola Tinubu, said comments of both the local and international observers on the election, showed that it was free and fair.

The Nation's main page also focuses on President Buhari's statement on the 2019 presidential election after receiving his certificate of return.

President Buhari in the speech noted that an election should not be seen as a war, advising his supporters not deride the opposition now that the election is over.

“Now that the elections are over, and a winner declared, we must all see it as a victory for Nigeria, our dear country. That was why I encouraged my teeming supporters, in a speech I read earlier today, not to gloat.

“Our God-given victory is enough cause for joy, without deriding those who were in the opposition. All Nigerians, going forward, must stand in brotherhood, for a bright and fulfilling future," he said.

Vanguard on its main page also reports President Buhari's statement after being declared the winner of the 2019 presidential election.

President Buhari reiterated that election is neither war nor a do-or-die affair and promised to run an inclusive government in his second term which begins on May 29 this year.

He said that all doors will remain open, adding that it “is the way to build the country of our dream; safe, secure, prosperous, and free of impunity and primitive accumulation by those entrusted with public offices.”

The Guardian on its main page shifts focus to the defeated presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar.

Speaking after Buhari was declared the winner of the election, the former vice president said he wouldn’t have hesitated to congratulate the president if the election had not been characterised by alleged outright fraud.

He reiterated that how would have conceded defeat if the election was free and fair.

Similarly, The Punch's main page is also on Atiku's statement about the 2019 presidential election.

Atiku said the result of the election announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) did not reflect the wishes of Nigerians and the votes of the electorate, saying said he would reclaim his ‘stolen’ mandate.

He said the election was the worst in 30 years, adding that he was consulting not only with his party members but other relevant stakeholders on his next line of action.
