Just in: Top Boko Haram leader Adamu Rugu Rugu, 3 others killed in gun duel with soldiers (photos)

- Some Nigerian soldiers have killed four Boko Haram members including one Adamu Rugu Rugu from Gwoza

- The soldiers and men of the civilian JTF were on a patrol when they came across the Boko Haram members

- The death of Adamu Rugu Rugu reportedly caused jubilation in Gwoza as many of the residents tasked the soldiers further

Troops of the 192 Battalion of the Nigerian Army taking part in the Operation Lafiya Dole have recorded a major success in the fight against the Boko Haram terrorists in Gwoza, Borno state. This feat was achieved in conjunction with officials of the Civilian JTF.

According to a statement by Colonel Ado Isa, the deputy director of Army public relations, 7 Division/Sector 1, Operation Lafiya Dole, the soldiers while on patrol along Gwoza-Yamteke on Wednesday, January 30, 2019, “came across some Boko Haram terrorists attempting to infiltrate the general area. On sighting the troops, the terrorists opened fire on them, which lead to a heavy exchange of fire.

“The gallant troops applied superior fighting skills and overpowered the terrorists and neutralised four Boko Haram terrorists including Adamu Rugu Rugu a very notorious terrorist, an indegene of Gwoza town, who had been troubling the law abiding citizens of Gwoza and its environment for many years.

“The gallant troops also recovered two machine guns and two AK-47 rifles,” the statement said.

It was learnt that when the news of the death of Rugu Rugu filtered into the town, the residents of Gwoza trooped out jubilating and commending the military.

They also urged the security operatives to clear more of such terrorists wherever they might be.

“Impressed by their performance, the General Officer Commanding 7 Division, who is also Commamder Sector 1, Operation Lafiya Dole, commended the troops for the gallant efforts.

“In a related development, troops of 152 Battalion, Operation Lafiya Dole, on Thursday, January 31, while on patrol and based on credible information, ambushed suspected Boko Haram terrorists along Kumshe-Usmanari road. During the ambush they neutralised one Boko Haram terrorist, while two of his accomplices escaped with gunshot wounds.

“Similarly, troops of 195 Battalion, Operation Lafiya Dole, in conjunction with police mobile force and Civilian JTF, while on cordon and search operation today at Umalari general area, arrested a suspected Boko Haram terrorist, named Mohammed Maina.

“He was found to be in possession of military kits and Mobile Police Force uniform. He has since been handed over to 7 Military Intelligence Brigade for further interrogation,” the statement said.

Legit.ng earlier reported that troops of Operation Sharan Daji (OPSD) conducting operations in Zamfara and Katsina states killed 21 bandits and captured 17 alive between January 22 and 29, Daily Trust reports.

It was gathered that eleven civilians and one vigilante were also said to have been killed by bandits.

The acting Force information officer Operation Sharan Daji, Major Clement Abiade, on Tuesday, January 29, while giving an update on OPSD’s activities within the period, said that the troops also destroyed bandits’ camps and rescued 89 kidnapped victims.
