Former APC chieftain condemns planned arraignment of Onnoghen

- The federal government will arraign the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) on Monday, January 14

- The CCT says Justice Onnoghen would be arraigned before it on the said date for alleged non-declaration of assets

- The move has been widely condemned by opposition political figures across the country

Former deputy national publicity secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, has condemned the planned arraignment of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).

Comrade Frank condemned the CCT's action in a statement sent to Legit.ng on Saturday, January 12.

According to him, the planned arraignment of Onnoghen, is meant to anoint another CJN who would help legitimize President Muhammadu Buhari’s second tenure at the Supreme Court.

He described the move as an illegality planned by the APC government and geared towards replacing Onnoghen at all cost before the February presidential elections.

He called on the international community to note the desperation of Buhari and the APC-led government, accusing the ruling party of using the judiciary to legitimize their illegal return to office.

He warned that the plot to illegally remove Onnoghen would be resisted by the generality of Nigerians, saying citizens would not fold their hands and watch such open electoral robbery being planned by the APC government.

Frank said: “Knowing that Nigerians have rejected them and their inept, clueless, lifeless and incompetent administration, they are now in a panic mode.

“But what they don’t know is that Nigerians are ready for them as they have resolved not to be fooled anymore. They will definitely be voted out but they are preparing ground for a spontaneous and massive crisis that will engulf the entire country should they rig the elections.”

“They know that the laws of the land do not permit the trial of a serving judge or justice without first subjecting any allegations against such a judicial officer for review by the National Judicial Council (NJC), yet they are in a hurry to illegally kick Onnoghen out because they are afraid that he would not lend the authority of the Supreme Court to validate their stay in office having planned to rig the elections,” he added.

The Bayelsa-born politician reminded Nigerians said having emasculated and subjugated the legislature under Senate President Bukola Saraki, Buhari and APC’s present game plan is to take over the judiciary.

“This is why all reasonable and well meaning Nigerians and the nation’s allies in the international community must speak out to avert this plot to throw the country in confusion and crisis by Buhari and the APC,” he stated.

Meanwhile, governors from the south-south region of the country have summoned an emergency meeting over the reported plans by the federal government to remove Onnoghen as the CJN.

Governor Seriake Dickson in a statement by his special adviser on media relations, Fidelis Soriwei, on Saturday, January 12, said warned that the action against the CJN was a dangerous escalation coming a few weeks to the general elections.

The governor said the south-south governors forum would make public its position on the issue after the meeting to convey the position of the zone to the Nigerian public.
