The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to drop the alleged plan to extend the tenure of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, by another six months.
Kola Ologbondiyan, the national publicity secretary of PDP told journalists on Sunday, December 23, that any plan to extend the tenure of Idris will be seen as a plot to perpetrate rigging in the 2019 election, The Tribune reports.
The party’s spokesperson alleged that the police boss had surrounded all the state commissioners of police with his own men who would be following them to any strategic meeting and spying for him.
He raised doubts about President Buhari’s intentions to conduct a free and fair election in 2019.
“We reject in totality the extension of tenure of the Inspector-General for another six months. We are aware that doing so the president wants to perpetrate his rigging plan for 2019 election," the PDP spokesperson said.
“Our party is also aware that the IG has surrounded the commissioners of police with his own men who would be following them to a strategic meeting, any meetings and be spying for him. We want to appeal to the Inspector- General of Police to insulate the police from politics."
Legit.ng had cited a report by The Punch indicating that President Muhammadu Buhari may have approved a six-month tenure extension for the inspector-general of police, Ibrahim Idris.
The move has, however, attracted criticisms from opposition political parties, under the aegis of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP).
The parties are threatening to drag the president before the court over the planned tenure extension.
According to the report, the president has agreed in principle to grant the IG additional six months in office to enable him to coordinate and supervise the forthcoming general elections in the country.
