Ortom set to honour 13-year-old child abuse victim Ochanya, unveils plan to name school after her

- The governor, thus, said it will honour Ochanya by naming a school in her country home after

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state on Wednesday, November 14, said he had directed the executive secretary of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Philip Attachin, to give the school in the country home of late Elizabeth Ochanya a facelift.

Ortom stated this during an interaction with journalists in Makurdi, adding that the school would be named after the girl, The Punch reports.

Legit.ng recalls that the 13-year-old Elizabeth Ochanya died of complications arising from the rape allegedly carried out by her aunt’s husband, Andrew Ogbuja, and his son Victor.

“I have instructed the SUBEB boss to give a facelift to the LGEA primary school, Ogene Amejo in Okpokwu local government area where the late Ochanya who was allegedly raped by her uncle and son had her primary education.

“We shall provide all instructional materials for the school and name it after her,” Ortom said.

Meanwhile, the remains of Ochanya, has been laid to rest. She was buried on Friday, November 2 in her home town, Ogene Amejo Okpokwu local government area of Benue state.

After the burial, a group under the aegis of Concerned Citizens For Ochanya, commended the thorough, transparent and unbiased investigation into the matter by the police and other related agencies, as well as the publishing of the actual facts.

The group appealed to Governor Ortom to immortalise the late Elizabeth Ochanya Ogbanje as a martyr of child rape, sexual molestation and abuse to discourage future acts of abuse, neglect and exploitation of children.

It also called on the government to also compensate her family members to mitigate the trauma of the painful loss.
