Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo state has cautioned Igbo leaders to desist from playing bad politics by adopting a presidential candidate ahead of the 2019 elections.

Okorocha gave the warning in reaction to reports that some Igbo leaders led by Professor Ben Nwabueze had endorsed the candidacy of Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Daily Trust reports.

The governor noted that the idea of adopting a presidential candidate was not a wise choice as such move forecloses the possibility of any presidential candidate becoming the president in future.

He said such decision was an unwise political move that had kept the southeast region in political wilderness in the past.

Okorocha stated that President Muhammadu Buhari remains the best alternative for Nigeria and expressed the firm belief that Bunari will win in 2019.

He said he will work hard to ensure the victory of Buhari as well as other candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 general election.

"On the adoption of a Presidential Candidate by Igbo leaders and their playing partisan politics, my advice is that Igbo leaders should toe the path of wisdom and should not come again adopting a Candidate," Okorocha said.

"Mine is an advise that the Igbos should be careful not to play the same type of very bad politics we played in the past which most of the times, kept us in political wilderness.

"As a people, we must be wise now and never foreclose the possibility of any presidential Candidate becoming the president tomorrow."

Meanwhile, the former Ondo state commissioner for works, Gboye Adegbenro, has dropped his senatorial ambition to allow his former boss, Olusegun Mimiko to replace him.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) on Thursday, November 15, in Abuja, announced that it has officially withdrawn from the presidential race and its candidate, Mimiko would now be fielded for senate.

Adegbenro, who is the Ondo central senatorial candidate of the ZLP, said in Akure on Thursday that he has withdrawn for Mimiko.

He said having consulted far and wide with his family, business associates, followers and constituents, he is bowing out before the full race commences in the interest of the party and state.
