Asked by Marca if Messi will play again for Argentina, he the 1986 World Cup winner said: "I think so.
"We will see, because if not then we are in trouble."
In the last 13 years, Messi has scored 65 goals in 128 matches since making his debut for Argentina in 2005.
Maradona's latest comments are in contrast to what he has said to Messi in the past after urging the No.10 to quit the team and send everyone "to hell".
He said: "If the Under-15s side lose, it's Messi's fault. He is always at fault.
"I would tell him, 'don't come [to the national team] anymore.'"
The 58-year-old claimed last month that Messi cared more about his Barcelona side than the national team.
And the two-time World Cup winner also added Messi was not a leader because he "goes to the toilet 20 times before a match".

But now the Napoli legend has insisted he wants to patch things up with Messi.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that Argentine football legend Diego Maradona has claimed that current Manchester United gaffer Jose Mourinho is a better manager than his counterpart from Manchester City Pep Guardiola.
Last season, Pep Guardiola helped Manchester City to win the Premier League title, while Jose Mourinho and his wards were unable to win any title.
