- Senator Bukola Saraki urges Nigerians to support his presidential ambition

The minister of labour and productivity, Chris Ngige, has insisted that there is no serious opposition to President Buhari’s intention to seek a second term in 2019, due to what he described as the excellent performance of the current administration in office in the past three years.

The Tribune reports that Ngige, who spoke in Onitsha, stated that the president’s chances were boosted by the fact that the All Progressives Congress (APC) still commands majority of support in the country.

“The scenario in 2015 is still what we have now. The voting pattern has not also changed because the All Progressives Congress (APC) still commands the majority of supporters in the entire Northern states and the south West states of Nigeria and now poised to break new electoral grounds in the south East and the South-South states,” he said.

Ngige also played down the effects of defections that have hit the APC, explaining that some prominent politicians from other parties were also joining the ruling party.

The minister described political parties as vehicles through which politicians use to get to clinch power and position.

“If you are going to Lagos from Onitsha, you may decide to join “Ekenedilichukwu”, while another person may want to join “Chisco” transport bus, but the destination remains Lagos.

“So it is a non-issue. People are just changing vehicles and heading to the same destination," he said.

Ngige urged people of the southeast to support the president's second term bid, noting that that power will shift to the south after Buhari's tenure.

Meanwhile, Senate president, Bukola Saraki, has called on Nigerians to vote for him to be the flag-bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and ultimately president of the country in 2019.

The Cable reports that Saraki said this when he visited Benue state to meet with party delegates and executives.

Saraki said Nigeria needed a president they could be proud of, while also noting that “Nigeria is at a crossroad”, and he wants to unite the country.
