I didn't say social media is a technology for criminals - IGP Idris

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, has said that he did not describe social media as a technology available to those that are criminal minded.

NAIJ.com reports that in a statement made by the force spokesperson, Jimoh Moshood, the police said that IGP Idris only said that social media could be used by criminal minded persons and people should be wary and careful of it.

The statement read: "The Nigeria police force wishes to categorically state that IGP did not mean that “social media is a technology available to those that are criminal minded” but that social media can also be used by criminal minded persons and people should be wary and careful of this.

"The f hereby enjoins all social media practitioners and users to disregard and discountenance the story

"The Nigeria police force is social media friendly and will continue to partner with social media practitioners and Users in ensuring adequate protection of life and property across the country.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had previously reported that the National Council on Information (NCI) recommended the “setting up of a Council to regulate the use of social media in Nigeria”.

The recommendation is contained in a communique issued at the end of Extraordinary Meeting of NCI on Hate Speeches, Fake News and National Unity held on Friday in Jos
