Unlike his elder brother Rashidi who played for the Super Eagles scoring 37 goals, Akeem also chose football as a career, but he never had the same level of success like his brother..

His dream was to play in Europe or America, and in the process, he had numerous trials in Brazil and Denmark, but he never signed for any club.

His ordeal began after the death of his late brother Rashidi Yekini who died on May, 4 2012, as Akeem had no other means of livelihood than to go into casual work as a labourer.

He was called for a trial in 2016 by local Nigerian club Gateway FC and Shooting Stars of Ibadan, but Akeem claimed he had a serious ankle problem which stopped him from playing.

Until his death, Akeem Yekini lived together with his mother in Ijagbo, Kwara state. He is survived by two daughters.

Previously, NAIJ.com had reported the impoverished condition of the mother of late football star Rashidi Yekini as the family had been living in terrible condition since the death of the Nigerian forward.

Sikiratu Yekini is the mother of late Super Eagles star Rashidi Yekini. She confirmed that she has been living from hands to mouth since the demise of her son.

She also explained how her late son Rashidi Yekini started his football career when he was young.
