Under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), the Nigerian government in collaboration with communities, groups and health maintenance organisations is supposed to provide easy access to healthcare for all Nigerians at an affordable cost through various prepayment systems.

But the scheme has been characterised with various challenges that has affected its plan to reach the nook and crannies of the nation.

However, the new Executive Secretary/CEO of NHIS, Professor Usman Yusuf has promised to ensure that more Nigerians come under the coverage of the community based health insurance scheme.

NAIJ.com gathered that NHIS has fished out 23,000 ghost enrolees from the scheme to ensure that the programme is not compromised.

Before now, N32 billion was paid to HMOs annually without much to show for it. But Professor Yusuf and his team ensured that the monies are paid monthly, unlike what was obtainable in the past, where HMOs are paid upfront for 3 months.
