We awarded 121 contracts, constructed 1,262 kilometers of road in just 3 years - Fashola lists achievements as minister

- Former minister of power, works and housing, Babatunde Fashola, says the federal govt awarded 121 road contracts and constructed 1,262 kilometres of road from 2016 to 2018

- According to Fashola, 277 kilometers of road was constructed, 345km was rehabilitated and 17,749 people were employed in the process, in 2016 alone

- The permanent secretary in the Ministry of Works and Power, Mohammed Bukar, backed up the minister’s statement; pointing out that the Buhari govt had achieved more than other previous democratic administrations

From 2016 through 2018, 121 road contracts were awarded and 1,262 kilometers (km) of road constructed by the federal government.

The development was made public when the former minister of power, works and housing, Babatunde Fashola, presented his scorecard as minister under the Muhammadu Buhari administration, Leadership reports.

Legit.ng gathers that according to statistics given by the ex minister, about 206 road projects across the country were inherited by his ministry in 2015. He said contractors had abandoned most of the projects due to a lack of funds, and in some cases, insecurity.

The ministry said 277 kilometers of road was constructed, 345 km was rehabilitated and 17,749 people were employed in the process, in 2016.

For 2017, 488 km of roads were constructed by the federal government, 256 km were rehabilitated and 31,227 persons were engaged. For 2018 till November, 497 km of road had been constructed, while 284 km was rehabilitated and 30,402 persons employed.

According to Mohammed Bukar, the permanent secretary in the Works and Housing Ministry, since 2001, there had been award of 365 roads for construction; of which the Buhari government awarded 121 in three years while previous governments awarded 144 others in the whole 17 years of the nation’s current democratic experience.

He said: “You will see that out of the 365 roads, 144 were awarded in the period of 17 years while in just three years, we awarded 121 roads, and are still counting because the 2018 procurement is still on-going.”

Hence, 121 road contracts were awarded, 1,262 km constructed, 885 km rehabilitated and 79, 378 persons were employed in the work sector, within 2016, 2017, and 2018.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Babatunde Fashola apologized to staff of the ministry whom he may have offended during his tenure as minister of works, power and housing.

Fashola stated this as the management and staff of the ministries gathered to bid him farewell.

The minister thanked the staff, whom he referred to as “a great team”, for keeping pace with him and enduring his schedules in spite of the inconveniences sometimes.
