UN secretary-general praises Buhari’s integrity, anti-corruption war

- UN secretary general, Antonio Guterres, hailed President Buhari for his integrity and anti-corruption fight

- Guterres' message was delivered to Buhari through Mohammad Ibn Chambas, UN's Special Representative of the Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel

- President Buhari said he was pleased with the UN's appreciation of his administration's focus on fighting corruption, poverty and ensuring regional stability

UN secretary general, Antonio Guterres, has reportedly commended extended President Muhammadu Buhari for his leadership integrity and the anti-corruption war.

Daily Trust reports that Guterres’ message was delivered by Mohammad Ibn Chambas, United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, at the State House, Abuja on Thursday, June 13..

Guterres reportedly commended President Buhari’s “integrity and quality as a statesman, especially in fighting corruption and driving public accountability.”

He said the UN appreciated the Nigerian leader’s commitment to tackling poverty, terrorism, insurgency and recharging the Lake Chad.

Chambas pledged UN continued technical support to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) towards the next general elections.

He also expressed the UN’s delight that Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Prof. Tijjani Muhammad Bande, was elected the president of the 74th UN General Assembly.

He described Prof. Muhammad-Bande as “highly regarded by his peers in New York,” adding that “We will ensure his tenure is a success.”

“We have no doubt that he will be a pride to Nigeria and Africa,” he said.

President Buhari, in his reaction, expressed Nigeria’s commitment to stabilising the West-African sub-region within available resources.

He said he was pleased that the United Nations appreciated his administration’s focus on fighting corruption, poverty and ensuring regional stability.

The president also restated his belief that peaceful relations with Nigeria’s neighbours remained imperative in confronting terrorism and insurgency.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that President Buhari warned Nigerians with corrupt tendencies to have a change of heart or be dealt with according to the provisions of the law.

Buhari gave the warning when speaking during the 2019 Democracy Day celebration in Abuja on Wednesday, June 12.

The president said his administration will crack down on those who incite ordinary innocent people to violence and social unrest.
