Mohammed Adamu, the inspector general of police, has called for tougher legislation against kidnapping and banditry, including possible seizure of assets linked to illicit proceeds from kidnapping and other heinous crimes, by the government.
The police chief made the call during the traditional Sallah visit to his office by a delegation of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Nasarawa state chapter, led by Alhaji Aminu Muazu Maifata, Daily Trust reports.

Legit.ng gathers that police spokesman, DCP Frank Mba, in a statement released on Wednesday, June 5, said the IGP believes potential kidnappers and other violent criminals will be strongly deterred by such act.
According to the IGP, the increasing spate of criminal activities had informed his decision to make such a call.
Adamu further used the occasion to praise the visitors on the successes recorded by Operation Puff Ader in the ongoing fight against criminal elements nationwide.
He disclosed that a total number of 63 kidnapped victims were rescued unhurt by police operatives since the launch of the operation on April 5, till date.
He added that the police had arrested 2,175 suspects for kidnapping, armed robbery, murder and cultism; and also recovered various arms and ammunition.

Recall that Legit.ng previously reported that IGP Mohammed Adamu revealed that no fewer than 1,071 people had died in crime-related incidents across the country in the first four months of 2019.
The police chief said the northern part of the country was worst hit by the deaths and abductions.
According to him, 767 of those killed, representing 71.62 percent of the national total, were from the North.
