Edo APC stakeholders call for Oshiomhole’s resignation as party chair

- More troubles appear to be coming the way of embattled national chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole

- Stakeholders of the APC in Edo, the home state of Oshiomhole, on Sunday, June 2, joined the loud calls for his immediate resignation

- The stakeholders added that the only way justice can be done to those involved in anti-party activities during the 2019 elections is for Oshiomhole to resign

Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo, the home state of the party's national chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, on Sunday, June 2, joined the loud calls for his immediate resignation.

The group under the umbrella of Edo APC Coalition for Progress, at a press conference held in Benin, the state capital, challenged Oshiomhole “to toe the path of honour,” accusing him of promoting nepotism in Edo politics and the nation at large.

Spokesman for the group, Dr. Peter Ologun, vowed that members of the body would organize one million march against Oshiomhole soon in Abuja, should he fail to immediately step down as the helmsman of the party, insisting that they “no longer have confidence in him.”

Ologun said they were determined to disown Oshiomhole as a son of the state “for leading the APC as an emperor,” a development he said cost the party its defeat in Zamfara, Rivers, Bauchi and Imo states.

He noted that President Muhammadu Buhari, despite having the powers in his hands in the governance of this country, has never interfered in the affairs of Katsina state and other states, but, in Edo state, the situation is the reverse.

The group said: “Even in the height of the late Chief Tony Anenih’s reign, he never took advantage of his influence in gaining political power at both state and national levels. But what we have seen in recent times in Edo state is a situation where Comrade Adams Oshiomhole is the one directly promoting nepotism in Edo and national APC.

“For example, he imposed his own younger brother, Seid Oshiomhole, on the people of Etsako West after intimidating all other contestants who were better qualified and from other villages and clans to step down forcefully.

“Is this the part a statesman should chart for a generation that is desirous of consolidating democratic culture?

“The imperial national chairman of APC Adams Oshiomhole at a time threatened to dissolve the APC state exco in Edo, if they failed to heed his dictates just as he did to Zamfara APC state exco.”

According to the group, “Oshiomhole’s resignation will help us recover the party from imminent collapse.”

The group added that the only way justice can be done to those involved in anti-party activities during the 2019 general elections is for Oshiomhole to resign from the party.

“APC members now live in fear because of Oshiomhole’s ineptitude and behaviour. He has suddenly turned the state into a place of anarchy; from the position of being a leader to an emperor who does not take advice from anybody.

“We stakeholders feel that Edo state is above anybody. He has no capacity to lead the party and therefore he should honorably quit the party as the national chairman,” the group concluded.

The crisis in the ruling party worsened on Monday, May 20 as the party's deputy national chairman (north), Senator Lawal Shuaibu in a letter called on Oshiomhole to resign. He also accused Oshomhole of lack of capacity to build the party.

Shuaibu had said in a letter addressed to Oshiomhole, that: “in advanced democracies, people who failed to add value or build over and above what they met on assumption of duty show some civilised examples, they honourably resign.”

Days later, the immediate past minister of communications, Mr. Adebayo Shittu, joined the call for the former Edo state governor to quit office.

“I endorse it. The truth is with Oshiomhole, this party would go down by the time President Muhammadu Buhari finishes his second term,” the former minister said.
