Buhari, state governors collaborate to tackle banditry; president gives crucial order to bring situation under control

- In a bid to tackle armed banditry, President Buhari has charged federal security agencies and states in the north-west to immediately begin implementation of the long term strategic defense plan

- The charge comes on the heels of the recent killing of 34 persons in an attack on Tungar Kafau and Gidan Wawa communities in Zamfara state

- The president gave the assurance that he is fully aware of his government’s responsibility to protect citizens’ lives and properties, and that he won’t fail

President Muhammadu Buhari has charged federal security agencies and states in the north-west to immediately begin implementation of the long term strategic defense plan to tackle armed banditry.

The development was made public in a statement released by presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, on Sunday night, June 16, Daily Trust reports.

Legit.ng gathers that the president is working with state governors in the north-west to tackle armed banditry; and the charge comes on the heels of the recent killing of 34 persons in an attack on Tungar Kafau and Gidan Wawa communities in Shinkafi local government, Zamfara state.

According to Shehu, under the plan, the federal government will be joined by states in providing logistical support for the operations of the security agencies.

In addition to vehicles provided by the federal government, the spokesman said the state governments will also provide some.

He said: “The federal government is establishing new forward operation bases and when all of these come together, the ongoing operations will be scaled up.”

Shehu said operations of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the various state Emergency Management Agencies, are expected to be streamlined, in order to provide succor to displaced persons, thousands of whom are taking refuge in the neighboring Niger Republic.

He said: “The full implementation of the plan is expected to provide security for residents to return to deserted communities.”

The president gave the assurance that he is fully aware of his government’s responsibility to protect citizens’ lives and properties, and that he won’t fail.

Recall that Legit.ng previously reported that President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday, June 15, said that the days of banditry, violence and criminality in the country will soon be over.

Speaking in Katsina at the fourth convocation of the Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, President Buhari stated that his second tenure will subdue all forms of thuggery in Nigeria.
