Breaking: Former UEFA president dies after brief illness

- Lennart Johansson has been reported dead after brief illness

- The late administrator was the president of UEFA for 17 good years

- During the period, he introduced Champions League football and stepped down from his position in 2007

Former UEFA president Lennart Johansson has been reported dead at the age of 89 after a brief illness.

The Swede was said to have been responsible for the introduction of Champions League championship during his tenure.

He was in charge of the European body for almost two decades after assuming the post in 1990 and stepped down in 2007.

According to AP news, the late administrator was said to have died during his sleep, although has been battling an undisclosed illness.

Swedish Football Association president Karl-Erik Nilsson says "Lennart Johansson was our biggest international football leader of all time, no Swedish has had a similar influence on football in the world. He was deeply respected as UEFA president and vice president of FIFA, his leadership has aroused admiration worldwide."
