The Benue state government has directed chairmen of the 23 local government areas of the state to leave with their official vehicles when their tenure ends, Nigerian Tribune reports.
Legit.ng gathered that the tenure of local government chairmen in the state expires this week.
Consequently, the bureau for local government and chieftaincy affairs in a statement issued on Sunday, June 9, requested Directors of General Services and Administration (DGSA), to allow chairmen to leave office with the official cars.
The statement was sent to journalists and signed by the information officer of DGSA, Ahangba Ayati.

Parts of the statement read: “The bureau of local government and chieftaincy affairs has requested that the Directors of General Services and Administration of all the councils in Benue state to comply with the directive of the state executive council on vehicles attached to immediate past local government chairmen.
“The directive stipulates that the chairmen be allowed to leave the office with their official Toyota Corolla cars given to them in accordance with laid down procedure.
“The Benue state executive council gave the directive before its dissolution on 27th May 2019.”
Meanwhile, Benue state governor, Samuel Ortom, has stated that he is not against local government autonomy as being reported in a section of the media.

The governor made the clarification on Sunday, June 2, via a statement sent to Legit.ng by his chief press secretary, Terver Akase.
The statement noted that Governor Ortom is one of the governors who supported constitutional amendment granting local governments autonomy.
