Bandits reportedly sack 8 villages in Niger state, kill 62

- Sixty-two people have lost their lives in Shiroro local government area of Niger state on Sunday, June 9

- The victims were killed when armed bandits attacked them in the local governmrn

- About 1,000 others were said to have been displaced by the attacks

Tragedy struck in Shiroro local government area of Niger state on Sunday, June 9, when armed bandits attacked and killed 62 people in the local government.

Apart from the 62 people that lost their lives, about 1,000 others were displaced, The Nation reports.

Legit.ng gathers that the disclosure was made by the senator representing Niger East constituency, Senator David Umaru.

According to him, 19 people were killed in Kwaki village, 14 in Barden Dawaki village, eight died in Ajatawyi, seven in Gwassa, five in Ajayin Bataro, four others in Bwailo, three in Baton and two reported dead in Giji.

He said: “I appeal to President Buhari to order the military into the area to stop the bandits. I am also calling on the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 1 Div Nigeria Army Kaduna to deploy more personnel to save the villagers from the bandits’ onslaught.”

The incident was confirmed by the police public public relations officer, Muhammad Abubakar, but he said only 12 deaths were recorded.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that not less than 14 people were killed in Kankara local government area of Katsina state as members of vigilante group and armed bandits clashed.

The clash took place in Tsamiyar Jino village in Kankara local government area as confirmed by the spokesperson for the police command in the state, SP Gambo Isah.

SP Isah said that it all started when some vigilantes attacked bandits in their hideout, killing seven of them and in response, the gang killed seven of the security men.

He said: “The vigilante members launched an attack on the bandits in the forest. They had a fierce battle and as a result of this about seven bandits were killed by the vigilante group and also about seven vigilantes also killed by the bandits.

“Bandits have taken away their corpse. The Divisional Police Officer is already there and normalcy has returned.

“The vigilante group are advised to always collaborate and synergize with security agencies whenever they have relevant information about movement of the bandits."
