Why we want Sokoto Sultan, FG to reject additional Kano emirates - Northern activists

- A coalition of northern activists has risen against the newly created emirates by the Kano state governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje

- The group of activists called on Muhammad Abubakar Saad, the Sultan of Sokoto, adding that the move was carried out without due process

- It also urged the federal government to reject it on the ground that it will destroy the state's history and bring about division among its people

Muhammad Abubakar Saad, the Sultan of Sokoto, who is also the leader of the Danfodio caliphate has been called upon by a Renaissance coalition in collaboration with civil society groups in Kano to denounce the recent creation of more emirates by the state governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

The group stated that the move by Ganduje was carried out without due process and proper consultation with major stakeholders in the state, Daily Trust reports.

The group put forward this position through one of its top members, Comrade Abdullahi Baffa Yola, in a press conference on Monday, May 20.

The coalition said: “We are alarmed by the current administration’s increasing disregard for due process, exhibiting a culture of impunity; ignoring court orders while people who have tried to broker peace suffered all sorts of indignities, threats and intimidation in an environment that is increasingly treading the path to a full-blown political dictatorship enabling thugs and bandits to operate freely with audacity thus creating an atmosphere of tyranny and violence.”

It points federal government to the key role the Kano emirate has played on continuity in the history, politics, culture and social well-being of the people of the state.

It added that the newly created emirates will bring about division in the state and will also destroy its united identity which has been a source of stability and inspiration to the people.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that new details had emerged of alleged infractions by the Emir of Kano, Mallam Muhammadu Sanusi II, which led to some drastic actions by Governor Ganduje

Ganduje had signed into law a bill creating four new emirates in the state. Similarly, the state's anti-corruption agency of the government reopened an investigation into the finances of the Kano Emirate Council, the body overseeing the state’s traditional institutions, headed by Emir Sanusi.
