Lagos, Osun top debtors’ list as states lose N62.1bn to debt repayment

- Lagos and Osun states are leading other states in terms of debt repayment

- With N5.90 billion repayment for the two months, Lagos tops the list, followed by Osun with N4.84 billion

- Cross Rivers is repaying N3,097,740,708.24 while Bayelsa’s is repaying N3,094,630,684.46

Lagos state is currently ahead of other states with the highest debt repayment of N5.90 billion for the first two months of 2019 followed by Osun with N4.84 billion.

According to Tribuneonline, the 36 states together forfeited N62,108,594, 857.48 which is due to them from the federation account to various forms of debt payments and other deductions in the first two months of 2019.

They are also joined in the list by Cross Rivers and Bayelsa who both forfeited N3,097,740,708.24 and N3,094,630,684.46 respectively for the two months.

Going further, the report stated that Yobe state paid the least of the 36 states with N248,598,960.31 and was closely followed by Anambra with N281,695,824.68.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) stated that it would collaborate with other stakeholders like the Nigeria Police Force to go after wealthy tax defaulters in 2019.

The disclosure was made by the agency’s executive chairman, Tunde Fowler, during a courtesy visit by the acting inspector general of police, Mohammed Adamu, to Revenue House on Thursday, February 7.

Legit.ng gathered that the FIRS boss informed the IGP that based on a closer look at the books of 45,000 tax debtors who had over N100m as turnover in their accounts, the agency had realised the sum of N23bn.
