Dr. Azibanigha Scott: 6 Tips to Having a Healthy Skin

The skin is the largest organ in the human body. It is literally the first thing people see when they see you. I got a lot of questions regarding last week’s article – a lot of people do stuff because they don’t know any better, hence I want to talk today about some tips to having a healthy skin.

Stay adequately hydrated
Adequate hydration of your skin is very important for the normal function of your skin. Your skin has different layers, and water in the deep layers helps to reduce friction between your skin fibres, and overall helps to protect your overall skin structure. This is particularly important, given the functions of your skin: acts as a barrier and literally prevents stuff from the outside world from coming in. It regulates your temperature, and protects you from toxins and harmful substances.

Do regular exercise
When you exercise, you heart beats faster, pumping blood to your cells to enable them function optimally. Exercise strengthens your muscles and make your skin cells repair any damage faster.

Take adequate vitamins particularly Vitamin C
Vitamin C plays a crucial role in the making of collagen, a very important protein found in skin. Collagen is found in many areas of the body in different format, and it is what gives the skin its structure. Vitamin C also acts as an anti-oxidant, counteracting harmful chemicals produced in your body on a daily basis.

Eat healthy
When food is broken down and absorbed, it eventually becomes part of the cells. This means you are your eating habits. Just as eating right is good for your heart, lungs, arteries and generally your overall wellbeing, it’s good for your skin too. Avoid consuming junk and processed foods; they will do you no good. Always strive to maintain a balanced diet.

Maintain good skin hygiene
Your skin serves as a barrier, among other things. This means it is the part of your body most exposed to the outside world – the pollution, the dirt, bacteria flying around, contact with various chemicals on a daily basis. So it is important to clean your skin. Shower appropriately, and use appropriate body lotions and moisturisers to keep your skin healthy and glowing.

Stop smoking
There is no benefit of smoking at all. Apart from the many problems it causes on your internal organs and many different cancers, it also speeds up ageing, hence the reason why smokers, compared to non-smokers of the same age, look way older. It also weakens the fibers on the skin, causing a lot of wrinkles.

This is just a brief overview on ways to have a healthy skin.
