Breaking: Sultan declares Ramadan starts on Monday across Nigeria

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar ‎III has declared Monday, May 6, as the first day of Ramadan, 1440 AH which marks the commencement of the Ramadan fast by the Muslims across the country.

Making the announcement his palace in Sokoto, Abubakar said the commencement of the fast followed reports of sighting of the moon across various states of the federation which marked the end of the month of Shaaban 1440 AH, The Nation reports

Recall that according to Premium Times, the secretary-general of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Ishaq Oloyede that the Sultan, who heads the council, will make a formal announcement later tonight, Sunday, May 5.

During the holy period, Muslims are expected to fast from sunrise to sunset by abstaining from food and drinks, as well as unholy and forbidden acts.

In Nigeria, the Sultan as the head of the NSCIA will formally announce the sighting of the moon and the commencement of the Islamic holy month.

Recall that Legit.ng earlier reported that the Sultan on Saturday, May 4, called on Muslims to look for the new moon of Ramadan 1440AH.

Abubakar made the call in a statement by Prof. Sambo Junaidu, the Chairman, Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council, Sokoto.

Junaidu said: “This is to inform the Muslim Ummah that Sunday, May 5, which is equivalent to 29 day of Sha’aban 1440A.H., shall be the day to look for the new moon of Ramadan 1440A.H.

“Muslims are, therefore, requested to start looking for the new moon of Ramadan 1440AH on Sunday and report its sighting to the nearest district or village head for onward communication to the Sultan.”
