Workers in Kogi state have been acutely battered and reduced to mere skeletons walking the streets and begging without any hope despite the over N200 billion received as monthly allocations, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has said.
Daily Sun reports that the NLC said apart from the N200 billion, the state government under Yahaya Bello also received various bailouts and collected loans.

Despite these huge funds to the state, however, the government owes workers between eight and thirty-eight months in salaries to workers.
The NLC said many of the workers in Kogi state now suffer from various ailments leading to some deaths.
According to the NLC, the worst hit among the workers are those at the local government level some of who are owed over 52 months salary arrears.
Those even paid among them get their salaries in ‘miserable percentages’ while pensioners are currently dying of hunger and starvation.
The labour union pleaded with the government to make salary payment a priority while pleading with President Muhammad Buhari to intervene in the release of the second batch of the N30.8 billion bailout fund to the state government to enable it meet the payment of salary arrears.
Legit.ng earlier reported how the Imo chapter of the NLC and other sister bodies issued a seven-day ultimatum to the state governor, Rochas Okorocha, to pay the salaries of workers for March 2019.

In a joint statement issued in Owerri by the state chairmen of NLC, the Trade Union Congress (TUC); and the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (JPSNC); Austin Chilakpu, Nkim Tangban, Aloy Iwuanyanwu respectively, the organizations demanded the salaries of workers.
The various unions wondered why the workers had not received their salaries for March 2019.
