Some soldiers said to be fighting Boko Haram insurgents in the north east may face disciplinary action following complaints over deduction from their allowances.
Daily Trust reports that these soldiers who are serving in parts of Adamawa north and Borno south alleged that N9,000 was removed from their January allowances.
They also alleged that after lodging complaints, the Army Headquarters sent a team on fact-finding mission.
However, the team which its members interviewed over 12 soldiers from the 143 Battalion in Madagali.
The money meant for the interviewed soldiers were said to have been refunded but later retrieved, again upsetting the soldiers, some of whom have spent over five years in the battle front and were not allowed to visit their families.
Legit.ng also gathered that the soldiers complained of poor quality of food for which they paid N15,000 monthly from their allowances.
Speaking on the issue, the Army public relations officer, at 28 Task Force Brigade, Lieutenant Abidoye Olusegun, said the soldiers were given their dues.
“All these allegations are not true, all soldiers are paid their allowances and nobody is being short-changed,” Olusegun said.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the federal government has released the funds for the payment of operational allowances of thousands of Nigerian soldiers fighting in several military operations in the country.
This was after an unknown soldier wrote to President Muhammadu Buhari over the alleged corruption in the army. The soldier claimed that this was the third month in a row that they had been denied operations allowance.
He said the soldiers were in debt because the salaries are not enough to sustain them at the battlefront and feeding their families back at home.
