Poisonous ‘ponmo’ hits Lagos market - Government warns

Lagos residents have been warned of the health risk of cow hide popularly known in Nigeria as ponmo.

The commissioner for health in Lagos state, Jide Idris, said the state government has arrested three persons connected with the sale of “toxic ponmo” in Ojo and Iba council areas.

A statement signed by Adeola Salako, the Lagos state director of public affairs said the poisonous ponmo was confiscated in large quantity from the arrested suspects.

“The commissioner for health, Dr. Jide Idris, who disclosed this in his office today (Sunday) while reviewing report of preliminary investigation and enforcement carried out on the sale of the toxic ponmo in the areas, stated that the three persons involved have been charged to court, while samples of the confiscated ponmo had been sent to the NAFDAC laboratory for suitability test analysis for human consumption,” Salako said.

The statement said that the traders of the ponmo operate at odd hours in different locations in Ojo and Iba local government areas of the state.

“Preliminary investigations and suspect-tracing revealed that the traders were very active in the early hours between the hours of 4.00 am and 6.00 am at various locations such as Volkswagen bus stop, Iyana Iba, and Afolabi Ege markets, all within Ojo local government and Iba local council areas of the state," the statement said.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that a female student of the Lagos state Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) dies after drinking rat poison.

She was reported to have carried out the act in her parent’s home, the reason why she killed herself is still unknown.
