James Milner replaced suspended Andy Robertson at left-back, with Jordan Henderson stepping in for Gini Wijnaldum who picked up an injury against the Saints.

Dejan Lovren came in for Joel Matip in central defence, making his first start since for the Reds since January.

The Tuesday clash started in earnest as both sides sought to make an immediate impact in the opening exchanges of the match.

However, it was the hosts who took the lead within just five minutes of game play courtesy of Naby Keita who had his shot take a deflection off Oliver Torres to sail into the top right-hand corner.

Roberto Firmino doubled the lead 21 minutes later, tapping home a low cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The visitors had a chance to pull one back in the 29th minute through Moussa Marega, but the striker's effort was saved amid a hint of a handball that was dismissed after the referee consulted the VAR.

Upon the resumption of the second half, the hosts nearly made it 3-0 in the 48th minute through Sadio Mane, but the Senegalese's effort that found the back of the net was ruled out for an offside.

Klopp's men survived a late scare from Porto in the dying minutes of the match as Telles and Brahimi combined well down the left blank in an attempt to bag a precious away goal.
