President Muhammadu Buhari has said incessant strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other unions in universities usually delay graduation of thousands of students.
The president made the statement during the 41st convocation ceremony of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Daily Trust reports.
Legit.ng gathers that the president, who was represented by the executive secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Abubakar Rashid, said strikes are inimical to the health and progress of any university system.
President Buhari urged ASUU and other university-based unions to be more sensitive in the pursuit of their demands for continuous peace and stability in the university system.

He said: “Since the inception of my administration in 2015, we have given appreciable priority to education and we will continue, undeterred, to invest substantially in education.
"Despite the numerous financial and other related challenges, government has not relented in its envisioned determination to ensure that education is revitalized in this country in the awareness that education is key to gaining access to global civilization in the 21st century.
“Obviously, industrial actions through strikes are inexorably inimical to the health and progress of any university system.
"It is particularly worrisome and disheartening to note the grievous loss in time and learning hours by our young men and women in their quest to graduate and join the nation building effort.”
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Tuesday, April 23, faulted the proposed plan to establish a private university which would be named after President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to the union, the plan is a disaster. This was disclosed by Professor Deji Omole, chairman of the union, University of Ibadan chapter. Omole's arguments was also backed by Professor Ademola Aremu, a former national treasurer of the Union.
Recall that Aisha Buhari announced her plan to establish a private university to be named after President Buhari.

Omole said: “When I heard about the proposed private university to be named after Mr President, I just looked at it as a joke taken too far. If we have a president in a country that has simply refused to fund public education and all we get from the first family is to establish a private university in collaboration with some foreigners, it is a disaster for this country and for a sitting president."
