After major election defeat, lone Lagos PDP lawmaker defects, joins APC

- Hon Dipo Olorunrinu pleads for mercy because of his late defection to the APC in Lagos state

- Olorunrinu says he can now see reasons why he should join his other colleagues who defected earlier

- The lawmaker explains that the PDP lacks any structure while the APC is the best political party

It was a setback for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos on Monday, April 29, as the only member of the party in the state House of Assembly, Hon Dipo Olorunrinu, formally defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Legit.ng learnt that the lawmaker's letter announcing his defection was read on the floor of the House by the clerk of the House, Azeez Sanni.

Olorunrinu announced his defection weeks after he was defeated by the APC during the general elections.

In the letter, Olorunrinu apologised for not defecting early enough like his other colleagues who came to the House on the platform of the PDP.

"I sincerely apologise that the defection is coming now. I ask for mercy," he said.

Olorunrinu, a representative of Amuwo Odofin I, said he had seen reasons why he should join his other colleagues from PDP who had left the party for APC far before the general elections and who, except one, won their re-election.

"As a young progressives minded politician, I realign with APC," he said.

Olorunrinu said he was satisfied with the leadership qualities of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, and senator-elect, Sikiru Osinowo.

"Once upon a time, we had eight of us from PDP in 2015, I said to myself i must join the progressives," he said before having a handshake with the speaker as is the norm with defecting members.

He noted that the PDP lacks structure and vision, adding: "I said to myself I must join the progressives which is the ruling party, APC."

Speaker Obasam who commended Olorunrinu for taking the action, said: "The best party in Lagos is APC, there is nothing to gain in PDP.

"At last we have the only man standing who has now joined those who are standing. We welcome you. You have always been with us, only that you refused to dump the leaking umbrella."

Legit.ng earlier reported how almost all the returning lawmakers at the Lagos state House of Assembly took turns on Thursday, April 4, to eulogise Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Speaker Mudashiru Obasa for being the major forces behind their individual victories.

Tinubu, a former governor of the state, is the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) which won the governorship election as well as the 40 seats of the state Assembly.

Many of the lawmakers who spoke on the floor of the House, urged Obasa not to relent, especially in the fight for the welfare of the lawmakers and the people of the state as a new session is set to begin.
