- The acting CJN also pledged to support the cooperation between the bar and the bench, in the dispensation of justice in the country
The poor mode of dressing by some lawyers appearing at the Supreme Court has been condemned by the acting chief justice of Nigeria, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad.
During a courtesy visit to the Supreme Court by members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Abuja branch on Wednesday, March 27, the acting CJN said the poor mode of dressing does not reflect the honour and dignity of the legal profession, Daily Trust reports.

Legit.ng gathers that Muhammad said the prestige and respect accorded to lawyers worldwide could be eroded by the poor dressing mode.
He warned that lawyers would not be allowed to appear in court, if they don’t adhere strictly to the time-honoured dress code of legal practitioners.
Muhammad further charged the Abuja NBA executives to always endeavour to give young lawyers the right training and tutelage, especially as regards the dress pattern and conduct expected of lawyers, so they would be constantly kept abreast of the rudiments of the profession.
The acting CJN also implored all legal practitioners to imbibe hard work, dedication, trustworthiness and all the other cardinal principles of the legal profession.
He urged them to advice their clients correctly at all times and never try to mislead them into believing falsehoods.
He said: “If at the end, the client discovers that the lawyer deceived him with false or misleading information, he will never like to do anything with any lawyer again, and unfortunately, that will now form the overall impression of such client about all lawyers; which is obviously antithetical to the image of the profession.”
Muhammad pledged to support the cooperation between the bar and the bench, in the dispensation of justice in the country. However, the acting CJN lamented over the reluctance of practicing lawyers to be appointed to the bench.
The chairman of the Abuja NBA, Folarin Aluko, earlier in his remarks, disclosed that different programmes and projects aimed at improving the lot of members in Abuja and other states of the federation had been initiated by the branch.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Justice Tanko Muhammad said he was not aware of the suspension of Justice Walter Onnoghen until he was called to the Presidential Villa.
Justice Muhammad said this in a response to the query issued against him by the National Judicial Council (NJC), on accepting to be sworn in as acting CJN without the approval of the NJC.
Muhammad claimed he accepted the position “in the larger interest of the country and the constitution”.
