ABU confers doctorate degrees on Dangote, NLC president

The Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria has announced its plan to confer doctorate degrees on Africa’s richest businessman, Aliko Dangote, and a former president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Hassan Adebayo Sunmonu.

The duo would be conferred with the honourary degrees on Saturday, April 27, as part of the 41st convocation ceremony of the university where 15,289 graduands would receive various degrees and diplomas.

Daily Trust reports that the institution said this in a statement by its registrar, Ahmed Abdullahi Kundila.

The university said Dangote and Comrade Sunmonu are to be honoured for their immense contribution to the economic and human development of the nation.

The statement said further that 10,803 out of the 15,289 graduands would be awarded first degrees.

A total of 4,486 will receive PhDs and different categories of postgraduate degrees and diplomas just as it said 81 students graduated with first class degrees.

According to the university, the event is scheduled for Mamman Kontagora Square.

Some of the activities at the event will include the commissioning of a number of projects all over the university by the minister of education, Malam Adamu Adamu, on Friday, April 26, and a convocation lecture at 3pm.

“The convocation will be rounded off with the commissioning of 10 blocks, consisting of 360 rooms, built at ABU site II by Alhaji Aliko Dangote to alleviate the acute shortage of students accommodation and would be commissioned by Dangote himself.

“Also, three blocks of hostels constructed by the University under the NEEDS assessment will be commissioned by His Highness, Alhaji Shehu Idris, Emir of Zazzau.

“The visitor to the university, President Muhammadu Buhari, will be the special guest of honour, while Governor Nasir El-Rufai is to serve as the chief host," the statement said.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Aisha, wife of Nigeria's president Muhammadu Buhari, revealed plans to immortalize her husband by establishing a university named after him in the near future.

Aisha disclosed this on Saturday, April 20 during a town hall meeting in Adamawa state's capital city Yola.

Speaking in the meeting organized by her in collaboration with concerned indigenes of the northeastern state, Aisha however did not reveal when the university would be established or where it would be located.
