Nigerians are no longer folding their arms and doing nothing; many are striving to make ends meet and do all they can to break out from the impoverished lifestyles that have plagued many communities. Such is the case of Amoo Christiana, a 52-year-old Nigerian female cobbler Legit.ng correspondents met in Magboro area of Ogun state.
The brave and hardworking woman revealed that losing one of her children, a 12-year-old girl, prompted her to start working as a shoe cobbler. In the interview she had with Legit.ng, she said the poor young girl had died from fire burns and her inability to foot the hospital bills coupled with other factors made her have a rethink about her business life.
She also stated that she has no active husband and has to take care of the other children, thus, her decision to pick up the work. According to her, many people love and admire what she does as they find it intriguing to find a woman of her age doing something like that.

The female shoe cobbler pitched her working table by the road side in order to attract customers; she mentioned in the interview that she has no other business other than shoe making. Apart from repairing shoes for people, she said that she can also make shoes from scratch. However, that skill is yet to be fully harnessed as she does not have all the machines needed to do that.

Christiana has been making shoes for a long time; she revealed that she both men and women patronize her and admire her courage in doing the job. When asked about her husband, the 52-year-old woman said he works as a carpenter but has no job at the moment. Thus, the responsibility of the entire family rests on her shoulders.

As at the time of the interview, Christiana’s young children were around her; she tried looking after them at the same time she attended to correspondents from Legit.ng. The hardworking woman claims to make as little as five hundred naira on a low sale’s day and as much as three thousand five hundred naira if sales are good.

Her children were withdrawn from a private school due to her inability to keep up with the bills. At the moment, her three children attend a public school in Magboro area of Ogun state. The eldest is thirteen followed by a 10-year-old and a 4-year-old.

When asked why she did not do something else, Christiana revealed that it took her four years to learn the art of shoe-making and she has been at it for about twenty-three years. However, her inability to buy sophisticated machines and equipment to build shoes has limited her from doing much.

She urged women in her situation to always find something to do.

Christiana revealed that she is a woman of faith as she said she has hope that things will work and take shape someday. This was her response to being asked if there were days she felt like quitting. She also mentioned that she found favour as she is not paying for the space she uses in working even though other people are doing so.

The female cobbler stated that she would like to grow her business if she finds the financial resources to do so. She urged women in similar situations like hers to find things doing as it is better than being reduced to a beggar.
