5 years after Chibok girls abduction: It's a grand shame - BBOG criticises FG

- Oby Ezekwesili has condemned the silence of the federal government in the release of the remaining girls in Boko Haram captivity

- The former education minister said it was painful that the girls were yet to be rescued after five years

Co-convener of Bring Back Our Girl campaign, Oby Ezekwesili, has criticised the federal government over its failure to secure the release of the remaining Chibok school girls, abducted by Boko Haram insurgents exactly five years ago.

Ezekwesili, in a tweet on Saturday, April 13, said it was shame that not a word has been uttered by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government on the status of their rescue.

The former minister of education, however, said the girls will never be forgotten.

She hinted that the annual Chibokgirls Distinguished Lecture 2019 on the theme: The Agony of Chibok Girls: Shame of a Nation will be delivered on Sunday, April 14, with Aisha Abubakar being the keynote speaker, just as Aiyyah Yesufu will deliver a special message in commemoration of the day.

Recall that about 276 girls from Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno state, were abducted by Boko Haram insurgents on April 14, 2014.

About 60 of the girls escaped in the commotion during the abduction, while others were released years after. However, reports have it that about 100 are still missing till date.

The #BringBackOurGirls campaign was launched after the girls were abducted and convened by Ezekwesili. The campaign gained international attention when former First Lady Michelle Obama and other celebrities tweeted about it sometime in 2014.

However, President Buhari vowed to to facilitate the prompt release of the remaining Chibok girls from Boko Haram captivity.

Legit.ng reported that this was contained in a statement by Garba Shehu, his senior special assistant on media and publicity in Abuja on Saturday, April 13, on the anniversary marking fifth year the school girls were abducted from their dormitory in Chibok community.

Expressing his commitment to rescue the victims of abduction, President Buhari vowed that he would fulfill the promise he made to the parents of the Chibok girls. According to him, effort is ongoing to secure the release of Leah Sharibu, another girl who was also kidnapped by the terrorists. He added the she would be soon reunited with her family.
