20 killed, 100 houses set ablaze as Benue residents clash over fish pond

- 20 people have been killed in a clash in Aila, Egba ward of Agatu local government area in Benue state

- About 100 houses have been reportedly set ablaze in the same community

- The clash according to report was as a result of a dispute over a fishing pond in the community

A community leader in Benue state has cried for help after a dispute over a fish pond in Aila, Egba ward of Agatu local government area in Benue state led to the death of many.

According to Benjamin Eigege, the chairman of Agbaduma Development Association (AGA) Makurdi branch, over 20 people have been killed in the dispute while 100 houses have been set ablaze.

The Nation reports that Eigege alleged indigenes of Aila in Egba ward Agatu local government area in Benue south have been under incessant attacks from neighbouring Egba community over a disputed fishing pond.

He said the crisis became worse on March 18 when an Aila man, Nghede Ibrahim, was shot dead at the fishing pond by suspected militia from Egba an adjoining village.

Eigege added that while the acting chairman of Agatu local government council Alhaji Oyigbocho visited Aila community to calm down tensions and pleaded against reprisal attacks, some suspected militia stormed Aila community and killed 9 persons immediately he left.

He said: “They set over 100 houses ablaze and destroyed property worth millions."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that troops of operation Sharar Daji and exercise Harbin Kunama III engaged bandits in a duel in various communities of Zamfara state.

A statement by Major Clem Abiade, force assistant director, Army public relation officer, in Gusau on Friday, April 19, disclosed that one soldier was killed and seven of the bandits were neutralised during the encounter.

Ammunition were also recovered during the duel as gallant troops set ablaze the camps of the bandits.
