It was a blessing in disguise for Kenyan Ahmed Khalid to miss an Ethiopian Airlines flight bound for Nairobi from Bole International Airport, Addis Ababa, on Sunday, March 10.
The plane Khalid was bound to fly in crashed approximately six minutes after take off killing all 157 passengers and crew on board.
It was gathered that Khalid who was received by his family at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Monday, March 11, was flying from Dubai to Addis Ababa from where he had planned to connect to Nairobi via the ill-fated flight.
A misfortune in the name of a delayed takeoff from Dubai turned out to be his luck.
"Because of the delay from Dubai, I missed the first flight to Nairobi... one passenger saw on his mobile the first plane which had just flew, like six minutes after it flew, it just crashed," he recalled

Ethiopian Airline’s plane crashed on Sunday, March 10, six minutes after taking off from Bole international airport.
Kenya lost 32 citizens including two top managers at Kenya Airports Authority and Nigeria lost two citizens including famous scholar, Pius Adesanmi, and Ambassador Bashua.
The airline's spokesperson, Asrat Begashaw, confirmed the gory accident killed 32 Kenyans, 18 Canadians, six Egyptians, two Nigerians, nine Ethiopians, seven French, eight Americans and seven Britons among other nationalities.
On the morning of Monday March 11, morning, Khalid landed safely at JKIA and was received by his joyful family members eagerly waiting for the arrival of their son at a time when other families were mourning their lived ones killed in the crash.
It was the second time the B-737-8 Max was crashing moments after take off and killing all on board.
The first crash of a similar plane's model occurred on Monday, October 29, 2018, and involved a Lion Airlines plane which plunged into Java Sea few minutes after take off from Jakarta Airport in Indonesia killing all the 189 passengers on board.
Ethiopian Airlines, which is currently the largest national carrier in Africa, has had at least 60 accidents in its over 74-year existence.
The airline immediately grounded all Boeing B-737-8 aircraft in its fleet following the Sunday accident.
