Buhari okays more N3.039bn to fund Ogoni cleanup

- The contract for remediation of five more lots for the Ogoni cleanup was approved on Wednesday, March 20, by the federal government

- The minister of environment, Suleiman Hassan, revealed that the contract was fixed at N3.039 billion

- The decision was reached at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday

The minister of environment, Suleiman Hassan, after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday, March 20, revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari approved the contract for remediation of five more lots for the Ogoni cleanup in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.

Speaking with newsmen in Abuja, Hasan said that the contract was fixed at N3.039bn, adding that with it, not less than 21 lots have been approved for the exercise, Daily Trust reports.

The minister said: “Work is in progress in the 16 lots previously approved. We have made appreciable progress. Today (yesterday) we have now awarded contract for five more lots. The contractors will be mobilised as soon as possible.”

Meanwhile, the federal government has approved the contract for the building of the faculty of Arts of the Adamawa state University.

Revealing this to newsmen on Wednesday, Adamu Adamu, the minister of education, said the contract was awarded through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

Adamu added that the contract has been awarded to Spectrum Engineering Limited at N613m; going forward, the minister said that the presidency has formally signed the Safe Schools declaration to make Nigeria focused on implementing the guideline.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the federal government on Monday, October 8, revealed that it had raised the sum of $177m out of the $1bn needed for the cleanup of Ogoni land in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.

It said that refineries of crude oil were expected to raise the balance, adding that the $1bn was to be raised over a period of five years.
