No plan to remove INEC chairman - Presidency

- Rumour that President Muhammadu Buhari is planning to remove INEC chairman has been debunked by the presidency

- Presidential aide, Garba Shehu, said there is no plan whatsoever to remove Yakubu as INEC chairman

- According to the presidency, anyone saying the president is removing INEC chairman is just displaying his illiteracy

The presidency has debunked claims by the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, that President Muhammadu Buhari is plotting to remove the Independent National Electoral (INEC) chairman, Mahmood Yakubu.

The senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, Garba Shehu, said there is no plan whatsoever to remove Yakubu as INEC chairman.

Shehu said: “Those reports are utterly baseless and false. There is nothing like that. Whoever is saying the president is removing INEC chairman is just displaying his illiteracy. Let him go and read the constitution.

“You need a resolution by two-thirds majority of the Senate for any such action."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that the chairman of the INEC, Professor Yakubu, reportedly confirmed Senator Mohammed Musa, a senatorial candidate in Niger state, as a registered contractor of the commission.

Yakubu confirmed this on Saturday, February 16, the day the presidential election was supposed to hold but was postponed.

Yakubu, at a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, admitted that the Musa, a candidate for Niger East senatorial district, was a registered contractor with the electoral umpire.
