INEC urged to dismiss officials responsible for logistics problems

- Following the postponement of the 2019 general elections, a security expert, retired Group Captain John Ojikutu, has called for the removal of INEC officials responsible for logistics problems

- The Independent National Electoral Commission cited logistics as its reason for postponing the elections

- Ojikutu says the reason for postponing elections since 2011 has always been logistic problems

A security expert, retired Group Captain John Ojikutu, has expressed displeasure over the postponement of the 2019 general elections, saying 60% of Independent National Electoral Commission staff that superintended the past elections which were equally postponed might still be in the system.

Daily Trust reports that Ojikutu said from 2011, 2015 and 2019, the reasons for rescheduling of elections had always been logistics.

Legit.ng notes that the security expert said: “It is high time they were identified and weeded out of the system.

“It has always been logistics problems since I can remember way back in 2011 when Jega came on board. Has INEC learnt any lessons from the experiences of the past including the 2015 experiences?

“There could still be no less than 60% of these in the systems; Who are those that were managing the INEC logistics in the past and how many of them are still in the process? Are there any intelligence about any from the experience of the past? What has INEC done to attend to these experiences?

"The leftovers in the systems that were part of the experience of the past could still be the clogs in the process; why would INEC not identify them and remove them."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Bishop Paulinus Ezeokafor of the Catholic Diocese of Awka, called on Nigerians to adjust to the inconveniences that the shift in the dates for the conduct of the general elections would cause them.

Bishop Ezeokafor, who said this at a news conference in Awka on Sunday, February 17, implored them to work toward participating in the elections on the new dates.

He said people should stop dwelling on blame game but support INEC to achieve free, fair and credible elections.

The bishop said Nigerians should stop the blame game because the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had given its reason for postponing the elections. He said Nigerians should support the commission to succeed.

He said: “The process is being handled by human beings and there are bound to be errors, so we should stop mourning our fate.

“Nigerians must keep faith with INEC because that is the only body that can create the platform for us to choose our leaders."

Ezeokafor who said it was unusual for him to be at his residence on a Sunday, said all efforts should be geared toward convincing the people to maintain their zeal to take part in the election no matter the cost.
