The Civil Society Groups for Accountability and Probity, have threatened to embark on a nationwide protest following the non-prosecution of Senator Godswill Akpabio, accused of corruption.
Jonathan Ogwuche, national secretary of the group, who addressed a press conference on Tuesday, February 5 in Abuja, said that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had not acted on petitions sent to it on the former Akwa Ibom governor.
He said that failure of the anti-graft agency to act on several petitions it submitted against Senator Akpabio, had discredited the federal government’s fight against corruption.
Ogwuche explained that Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) would have no other option than to protest, to draw the attention of the international community.

His words: “We herein call on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately direct the EFCC to proceed with the prosecution of Senator Godswill Akpabio, while a similar presidential directive should be issued to the CCB to proceed with the trial of Akpabio at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
“Justice should take its full course without creating room for sacred cows. We shall mobilise our members across Nigeria for a massive protest if measures are not taken to prosecute Akpabio.’’
He said that the group had within the “precincts of the law’’ tried to make the EFCC and CCB to prosecute Akpabio.
“We have written several times to these anti-graft bodies both directly and through open publications without any response,” he added.
Meanwhile, a group of CSOs have called on the federal government to protect whistle blowers in Kano state against victimization.
In a statement sent to Legit.ng on Monday, January 28, the CSOs specifically made a case for Mr Jafaar Jafaar, an online news publisher who exposed the alleged corrupt deals of Kano state governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, in series of videos that went viral online in 2018.

The CSOs cautioned that is important that Jafaar and the contractor, are given every support needed to ensure that they are not victimized by the agents of the Kano state government.
They also called on the federal government to extend the protection and support which its whistle blower policy promises to Mr. Jafaar and the contractor, who recorded the governor in the viral video.
