Ronaldo fails to score as Atalanta knock holders Juventus out of Copa Italia

- Atalanta's Timothy Castagne netted the opener against Juventus in the 38th minute

- Duvan Zapata doubled Atalanta's lead to see the home side go into the break with 2-goal advantage

- Zapata scored his second goal and Atalanta's third in 86th minute to end Juve's dream of defending the Coppa Italia

Atalanta defeated Coppa Italia holders Juventus 3-0 in a tough quarterfinal clash on Wednesday, January 30, at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia.

Atalanta were in the front foot from the start, but Giorgio Chiellini needed his experience to execute a last-minute tackle on Duvan Zapata, while Wojciech Szczesny punched to safety a Papu Gomez effort heading for the far post.

In the 27th minute Atalanta and Juventus suffered injury setback after the Josip Ilicic and Chiellini limped off after suffering knocks.

Juve brought in Joao Cancelo but he was caught in possession by Timothy Castagne, who dashed forward to smash the ball into the net for Atalanta’s opener.

Moments later, it was 2-0, as Zapata turned on the edge of the penalty area and hit a stunner that beat Szczesny and sailed into the net for his 16th goal in the last 10 matches for Atalanta.

Juve boss Max Allegri was sent off for dissent after throwing his coat on to the field of play.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Paulo Dybala had free kicks from vintage positions to score but failed to make it count as they could not break Atalanta’s defence wall.

In the closing minutes of the second half Zapata netted his second and Atalanta's third of the game to send Juventus packing from the Coppa Italia.

Atalanta will now face Fiorentina in a two-legged semi-finals, after they humiliated Roma 7-1 today.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Juventus maintain their unbeaten status in the Italian League after coming from one goal down to beat :Lazio 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday, January 27.

It was a goalless affair in the first half of the meeting as both teams failed to find the back of he net. But the home team broke the deadlock in the 59th minute following an own goal from former Liverpool star Emre Can.
