Despite criticisms, President Muhammadu Buhari says his government has made remarkable progress in the fight against Boko Haram terrorists.
According to the Crisis Group, Boko Haram insurgents have killed more than 70,000 residents, abducted thousands and displaced over 2.3 million from their homes since 2002, Punch reports.

Legit.ng notes that the sect was ranked as the world’s deadliest terror group, by the Global Terrorism Index in 2015.
However, in a December 2015 interview with the BBC, President Buhari said the insurgents had been technically defeated by his administration and that they were no longer able to carry out conventional attacks against security forces or population centres.
But since then, the terrorist group has carried out deadly attacks, mainly in the north-east.
In spite of the attacks, the president, on Wednesday, January 2, insisted that remarkable progress had been made against the terrorists.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that President Muhammadu Buhari declared that the root cause of the Boko Haram insurgency is political in nature.
The president stated this at the maiden edition of the Nigerian Air Force international air power seminar with the theme “Air Power in Irregular Warfare: A Framework for Understanding and Responding".
According to the president, the political nature of the insurgency is the reason why ''successful counterinsurgency operations would therefore require unity of efforts across multiple ministries, departments and agencies covering political, economic, law enforcement, intelligence and of course the military, in what is popularly called whole of the nation approach."
