Election 2019: Governor Obiano denies dumping APGA

- Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra has denied media reports suggesting he has dumped his political party

- The governor said the reports are calculated attempts by the opposition to discredit him and his party

- The governor says he remains the national leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)

Anambra state governor, Chief Willie Obiano, has denied stories making the round that he has dumped his party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for another party.

The governor said the reports are calculated attempts by the opposition to discredit him and his party, adding that he remains the national leader and chairman board of trustees of APGA.

Governor Obiano made the clarification in a statement signed by the commissioner for information in the state, Chief C. Don Adinuba, urging the public to discountenance such report.

The governor said such malicious and undignified statements thrive during election periods and the opposition parties would always exploit such avenues in a bid towards winning election.

He accused the duo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) of peddling such rumors.

Part of the statement read: “Obviously on account of his tremendous popularity and effective leadership, various political forces in Nigeria had devised all kinds of methods to obtain the support of the governor and enhance their chances of winning the 2019 general election.

“Some had gone as far as claiming in the media that Obiano had defected to their parties, providing details of how the so-called defection took place at a campaign rally.

“Investigations had revealed, however, that those peddling such rumour were agents of two of the three leading political parties in the country, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“The Anambra state government wishes to state for the umpteenth time; that the reports which have been trending on the social media are completely false.

“Far from contemplating defecting to any party, Governor Obiano remains both the national leader of the APGA and chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees.

“He has in the last few weeks been campaigning for APGA’s candidates in the forthcoming general polls, including John Gbor, the party’s presidential candidate.

“He has been consistent in telling the immensely huge crowds of supporters wherever he has been to vote for only APGA candidates. He has never asked Anambra people to vote APGA candidates in some elections and candidates of some other party or parties in another election.”

Earlier this month, Governor Obiano had said his government’s good relationship with the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC government has contributed immensely to the social harmony in the state.

According to the governor, the good relationship had “contributed in no small measure to the unrivalled social harmony in the state which has made Anambra one of the most competitive states in the country.”

Obiano added that Anambra state government has a good relationship with other state governments and all political parties and their members.
